1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Kristi Bothur. I am 45 years old, and the wife of a bivocational pastor. My husband and I have been married for thirteen years, and we have two children, ages 7 and 3, as well as five we will meet in Heaven whom we lost during pregnancy. In addition to our church ministry, we have a ministry called Naomi’s Circle that reaches out to other parents going through pregnancy or infant loss. We also homeschool, and I write on my own blog called “This Side of Heaven,” as well as two collaborative ones: one for pregnancy after loss and one that is a local moms blog.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it. Do others practice headcovering there?

I attend two churches, both Southern Baptist. My husband is the pastor of South Beltline Baptist Church, a small, older inner city church. Until recently, our children were the only ones there, and so we are also active members of Spring Valley Baptist, a larger church that we have attended since we got married. I do not know of any others who practice headcovering at either church. Read more

Should Christian Women Wear the Hijab?

The dictionary definition of the Hijab is “a traditional scarf worn by Muslim women to cover the hair and neck and sometimes the face.” 1) hijab. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com Unabridged. Random House, Inc. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hijab (accessed: December 18, 2015). The definition itself identifies this as Islamic dress. So the question is, should Christian women use a Hijab to cover their heads when praying and prophesying (1 Cor 11:5-6)?

As we’ve covered already, the passage in 1 Corinthians 11 doesn’t identify any particular style for covering the head. Paul uses a verb to command an action (cover her head) rather than using a noun to indicate a particular style (e.g, put on a hijab). This means the style of covering falls into the category of Christian liberty. So if the question is, “is it biblically permissible to wear a Hijab?”, the answer is yes. However, a second question that should be asked is, “is it wise to do so?” Before we give our opinion, I think it’s important to understand the ​two main views in this debate. Read more

Glenn Ferrell has been pastor of First Orthodox Presbyterian Church in San Francisco since November 5th, 2010. Previously, he was pastor of Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho, for more than five years; and prior to that a church planter and evangelist in the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Glenn grew up in Eastern Kentucky, the grandson of coal miners, a seventh generation Appalachian. He attended college in North Carolina, and seminaries in New Jersey, Kentucky and California. He did additional graduate work in Ohio and Kentucky. He was ordained to the ministry in 1987. Before that he worked in communications, information systems, and as a community developer. He served in Southeast Asia with the Army Signal Corps in the mid 70s. Married to Susan Nye Ferrell; they have six children and twelve grandchildren.

Glenn is an orthodox, confessional Calvinist, who subscribes to the historical Westminster Standards as an accurate summary of the most important teachings of the Bible.

The Peaceful Wife: A Mainstream Book That Promotes Headcovering

The Peaceful Wife

April Cassidy runs a blog called “Peaceful Wife” where she writes encouragement to women on biblical womanhood. She’s also practices headcovering and shared her testimony with us here. I got an e-mail from April in August 2014 telling me that she had been picked up by a Christian literary agent . Shortly after I heard the great news that her book was going to be published through Kregel Publications. It’s almost a year later now, and her book “The Peaceful Wife” is about to release on January 27th.

In today’s world, women are often rewarded for having type A personalities. Driven, demanding women achieve higher positions, better salaries, and praise for their ambition. After all, no one goes into marriage hoping for a promotion. What is a wife to do?

April Cassidy knows this struggle firsthand. She thought she was a great Christian wife and begged God to make her passive husband into a more loving, involved, godly leader. How do we Harmonize 1 Corinthians 11 and 14?

How do we Harmonize 1 Corinthians 11 and 14?

In 1 Corinthians 11, women are told that they are to pray or prophesy in the assembly with a head covering. However, later on in the letter Paul says that women are forbidden to speak and must stay silent in the same context. How do we harmonize these two passages?

First, let’s read the two verses in question:

But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head… Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? (1 Cor 11:5,13)

As in all the churches of the saints, the women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church meeting. (1 Cor 14:33a-35 HCSB)

The first thing we must note is that both passages are timeless. Paul says that the practice of head covering and the silence of women in the assembly are held by all the churches (1 Cor 11:16, 1 Cor 14:33-34 HCSB) and both issues are grounded in proper biblical authority (1 Cor 11:3, 1 Cor 14:34). So both must be taken seriously and have application to the church today.

There are three main ways to harmonize these passages. We’ll go over each of these one by one and then we’ll give our take on which one we find most compelling. Read more

The topic of head covering has never been such a heavily debated topic as in the last 50 years of the Church. Scores of liberal thinking, humanistic and cultural ideas have led to the place where people have repudiated the idea that women should wear head coverings. Multitudes of examples have been given on why someone should not wear a head covering but the interesting fact is very few of these arguments address the clear references to the biblical truth of the meaning behind head covering. Everyone is quick to try and dismiss the need for a piece of cloth on the head yet why is this practice even done in the first place? Some will quickly read over the passage in 1 Corinthians and say it is just a requirement for women to pray in that culture or time. But many statements in the passage clearly show there was a deep spiritual meaning and significance behind the practice. It was not simply a requirement of order for prayer but a much deeper reality of the Church, concerning the angels, and the government of God. Read more

Mark Minnick on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 (Sermon Series)

Dr. Mark Minnick

After completing an M.A. in Bible from Bob Jones University in May 1977, Mark was burdened to continue his education. While continuing to pastor a small church in North Carolina, he began pursuing a doctoral degree. During this time, he accepted a call from Mount Calvary Baptist Church (Greenville, SC) to serve as a part-time associate pastor along with then-Pastor Jesse Boyd, a man with 40 years of pastoral ministry experience whose influence on Mark had already been formative. Soon he began teaching full-time at BJU, eventually teaching both Bible and Homiletics on the undergraduate and graduate levels. After three additional years, he completed a PhD in New Testament Interpretation in 1983 with a dissertation on “The Matthean Genealogy and Birth Account of Jesus Christ.”

For the next five years, he taught full-time and faithfully assisted Pastor Boyd as one “who poured water on the hands of Elijah” (2 Kings 3:11). In May 1989, Pastor Boyd handed over to Mark the reins of the ministry of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. At this point, he greatly reduced his University teaching role and became the first full-time pastor in the church’s 27-year history.

Since that time, God has expanded Mark’s ministry and provided even broader opportunities of service for him. He and his wife, Linda, have raised three girls, two of whom are now married. Mark is not only a pastor to his congregation. He regularly visits international mission fields to aid and encourage missionaries, serves on the boards of Gospel Fellowship Association Missions and the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship, and serves as a member of The Committee on the Bible’s Text and Translation.

It’s difficult to put into words how grateful we are that Pastor Mark Minnick preached through this section of Scripture. He goes through this passage slowly and with great exegetical care. It truly is one of our favorite sermon series on this passage. It is a must hear series and I’m sure after you listen you’ll want to pass it on to others too.
