Biblical Womanhood, Beauty, & Modesty Resources

At the Head Covering Movement we focus on one thing primarily: head covering & its symbolic meaning. Many sites have a more general focus, however, we’ve decided to be more strict in our focus. Having said that, our email is full of requests for resources on modesty and biblical womanhood. There are plenty of great resources and ministries that deal with these topics so today we’d like to introduce you to some of them.

The Joy of a Clear Conscience: Head Covering, Bikinis, and Modesty

In this video Elizabeth McGee shares about the joy of having a clear conscience. In it she shares an example about bathing suits to help you see that there’s freedom in following the Lord’s commands (in headcovering and everything else).

Biblical Womanhood & Modesty

While we hope that Scripture’s teaching on Biblical Womanhood has first and foremost affected your heart and behavior, have you allowed it to speak to your appearance and wardrobe too?

Why Headcovering is not about Modesty

Why Headcovering is not about Modesty.

Modesty according to one biblical lexicon is “the state of being appropriate for display”. 1) εὐσχημοσύνη, Arndt, W., Danker, F. W., & Bauer, W. (2000). A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature (3rd ed.). Chicago: University of Chicago Press.  This is propriety in clothing where our “unpresentable parts are [covered], which our more presentable parts do not require” (1 Cor 12:23-24). It is a command of Scripture to dress modestly (1 TIm 2:9-10). Sexual temptation is a real concern and while Jesus acknowledges that “it is necessary that temptations come” he warns “woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!” (Matt 18:7 ESV). So if by your dress you’re tempting people to lust, Jesus has strong words for you. Since we are all committed to dressing modestly we must ask is our hair an “unpresentable part” (1 Cor 12:23) and is that why women are to wear a covering over it (1 Cor 11:4-6)? I’d like to argue that Christian head covering is not commanded for modesty’s sake. Here are my reasons why: Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi! It’s Caro, the author of the modesty-French-blog “La femme modeste“. I usually describe myself as a “circus girl” as that’s what I’ve practiced since I was a little. I even used to work as a circus teacher which allowed me to travel a little bit. One highlight was teaching in Finland for a year. Today I am back “at home” where I am joyfully learning to serve my family and giving my free time for God’s things, such as promoting modesty and headcovering through my blog.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it. Do others practice headcovering there?

I go to a baptist church in my town which is very evangelism-oriented. A young women who practices headcovering recently arrived in my church, just when I started to deal with the issue. Her presence really encouraged me! So today there are two veiled girls in this church. There is also another woman who always wear a hat but I don’t know if she does it as a dressing habit or if she does it because of biblical belief. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I was baptized and confirmed at Mount Hope Lutheran Church & School. My family was know for having a EC membership, which means we attended church on Easter and Christmas, if that. After confirmation at the age of 13, like so many other Lutheran kids, I wandered away from the church. I always keep my faith in God; however, I didn’t go to church on a regular basis. I would go to any church just to get the experience, because I’ve always been fascinated with different cultures and religions. While others dreaded Sociology class in high school, I loved it. After high school, I went in Air Force where I meet and married my husband. We’ve been married for twenty-six years and have a twenty-two year old daughter. After having my daughter, I started attending church regularly and sent my daughter to Christian schools were I became very active in church service again. I currently work as a secretary for the church and school I grew up in and where my daughter attended school from preschool – 8th grade. Read more
