A Husband’s Authority is Limited (He is Not Pastor or King)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many Christians got a severe wake-up call to what it looks like when one sphere of authority (the government) takes more power than it has been granted. Some people lost the ability to travel, go to church, work at their jobs, and run their businesses, while others were forbidden from visiting their elderly and dying relatives.

My own government’s actions (in Canada) led many Christians to do a deeper study of Romans 13, a chapter that describes the God-given role of government authority. A close reading of that text, especially in harmonization with other passages, shows that the government does not possess sovereignty over all of life. It has a rightful authority, but it is limited and for a specific purpose.

Just as life is difficult and unstable when living under a tyrannical government, so it is for a wife and children living under the roof of a tyrannical husband. In this article, I will explain the doctrine of “Sphere Sovereignty,” which provides limits on all human authority, including that of the husband. This will show women how, when, and why they can refuse their husband’s leadership when necessary – without being unsubmissive in the Lord’s eyes. Read more

When I first began to feel convicted to cover my head, I was a little confused. I had never known anyone who practiced this, and I wasn’t sure if I was understanding correctly. It was at a time in my life when I had been praying for change: for my home to be filled with more joy and peace, for direction, and for my husband to step more into his role as the spiritual leader of our home. I didn’t understand where head covering would fit in with this, but I began researching and trying to understand.

I read 1 Corinthians 11 and it became clear to me.

Why Head Covering Is About Love

Do you struggle with the fear of what other people will think of you for covering your head?

Most of us who cover probably have. When I first began to drape a scarf over my hair in church, I was petrified. I was the only one. While my husband and I were wholly convinced that this is what Scripture mandates and were glad to follow it, my personality is that of someone who strongly dislikes sticking out or doing anything that causes people to notice.

Would I lose old friends? Repel potential friends? Be gossipped about?

What would others think? Would they think I was legalistic, doing this because I believed it made me better in God’s eyes? Would they think that I sat in judgment of women who didn’t cover as I did? Neither of these was true, and the thought of it all made me sick to my stomach.

The one thing that has most sustained me through these questions is to rest my eyes on the Savior, and to do it for love of Him.

Many couples are into “love languages.” Even those who aren’t still tend to be familiar with the concept: knowing what speaks love specifically to your spouse. Some people feel most loved through quality time or conversation, others by acts of service, others by thoughtful gifts, others through physical touch, and still others through words of encouragement.

But, have you ever thought about what God’s love language is? God IS love, the Bible tells us. So He is the One Who gets to define it, and He certainly gets to tell us how to love Him.

Scripture actually leaves no question as to what God sees as love toward Himself.

It isn’t passionate words about how much we love Him.
It isn’t singing and praising and basking in the emotional glow of worship.
It isn’t faithful church attendance and ministry.
It isn’t service and sacrifice.
It isn’t even reading the Bible, or time spent with Him in prayer.

All of those will be the natural outpouring of a heart that loves Him, and all are necessary — yes!

But one can do all of those things and not love God.

Re-post • @1corcovering – In my context, the counter-cultural aspect of head covering is unmistakable. Only two women in my congregation adhere to this practice – myself and a woman over 70 years of age. This symbol of humility could easily become a “distinctive,” a source of personal pride that leads to divergence with the Body rather than convergence in Christ. I struggle with the tension between downplaying this discipline for reasons above vice wanting to draw attention to discuss its larger significance. I experience this tension even in instagram; these postings are inherently attention-seeking, yet I pray that they would draw attention to Christ, the one worthy of attention who brings any tension to its perfect telos in Himself. #headcoveringmovement #headcovering #christianheadcovering #headcoverings

Re-post • @purposed_homemaker – My favourite and most cherished time. It really is. For some reason I slept in a little longer today, but this is still so important to me.? I need to have my intentional, God-focused time each day. . What’s amazing is when I leave my time with the Lord, and I’m finished talking to Him, praying to Him, reading His Word or even worshipping Him at the piano, it doesn’t stop. I love how someone put it, God GOES with you through your day. You shouldn’t think that your “devotional time” is the only time He is with you or you have focus for Him.❤ . You can’t be a “30 minute Christian.” He’s with you in every aspect of your life, acknowledge that, and have Him be your go-to. He’s GOD after all!!!!?? . My favourite Bible verse is Matthew 5:16. “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” . In order to do that we need to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit. Nothing good can come from us, it’s only from Him as we are just sinners. There is no good from us on our own.
