1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Syrina Fields. I am a follower of Christ, mom of two kids, wife, and farmer. I’m a lover of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, art, anything vintage, and a good ole cup of coffee.

I attend church at Harvest Time Freewill Baptist Church in Box Elder, SD. It’s similar to a Southern Baptist church. Freewill Baptist churches are very common where my husband grew up in the Ohio/Kentucky area. At first, I was the only one practicing head covering at church. However, the pastor’s fiancé and mother have both started covering, which has opened a lot of doors to conversations regarding head covering and the biblical meaning behind it.

2) What led you to start covering?

I originally thought that head covering was something specific to a different religion – not even part of Christianity – and mostly an issue of control.

In 2020 and 2021, I was feeling the need to start building a closer relationship with my Heavenly Father. I was questioning both my internal and external self. You could say I was feeling led as a wife, daughter, friend, and mother of a young lady to ensure I was showing my children what the true godly role was for a woman. At the same time, I was hearing a lot of political views about what a woman is, and my friends and family had their own opinions of the role of a woman in the household. Read more

What Did Saint Augustine Believe About Head Covering?

[Series introduction: This post is part of a series that examines what certain leaders in church history believed about head covering. Their arguments, choice of language and conclusions should not be misconstrued as an endorsement from us. The purpose of this series is to faithfully show what they believed about covering rather than only selectively quoting the parts we agree with.]

Saint Augustine (354-430 A.D.) served as Bishop of Hippo (modern day Annaba, Algeria). He is the pre-eminent “Doctor of the Church” according to Roman Catholicism, and is considered by many Evangelicals to be one of the theological fathers of the Protestant Reformation due to his teachings on salvation and grace. He is best known for his books “Confessions” and “The City of God.”

Augustine received a letter from his friend Possidius who was Bishop of Calama asking him numerous questions. One of those questions was should he (Calma) permit “ornaments of gold and costly dress?” Augustine told him that it shouldn’t be forbidden “except in the case of those who [are] neither [married] nor [intend] to marry.” He said this was because they “are bound to consider only how they may please God.” The rational he provided to allow those who are married to wear decorated dress was that they must “consider how they may in these things please their wives if they be husbands, their husbands if they be wives” (1 Cor 7:32-34.) So Augustine saw that looking good and attractive for your spouse was permitted. He did have one stipulation to this allowance though. He said, “with this limition, that it is not becoming even in married women to uncover their hair, since the apostle commands women to keep their heads covered.” So here we see that even though he permits married women to wear decorated dress, they are not allowed to uncover their heads. The fact that he said it was not becoming “even” in married women likely indicates that he believed single women were to cover their heads too. Covering Testimony: Hannah Falanga

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a homemaker. I feel the Lord has called me to be this, as an example of someone who can, Lord willing, live well in such a setting—not trapped, not unfulfilled, not even unsuccessful, but rather someone who is following the Lord’s extremely personal calling for her life. I am a young lady in search of the set-apart life, living in hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus, governed by my Lord Jesus, living my life for the Lord by being an artist, fiber artist (crocheting and knitting), cook and baker, writer and blogger.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

I go to church at my local Calvary Chapel. It is a Bible upholding, traditional marriage teaching, pro-life loving, God fearing church which I am blessed to be a part of. The teaching there is not only sound, but challenging and in-depth. I am currently the only lady (or nearly the only—the other woman may be in another service) to wear a headcovering. Read more
