Why a symbol and not the real thing? In other words, why use a symbol of submission instead of really being submissive. It’ s so much easier to just put something on your head, and not to go through the process of the cross which results in becoming submissive. Jesus came and fulfilled all things, and everything symbolic was done away with. Paul really had not learned this yet.

Hi @pattiblount:disqus, we’re definitely not advocating empty symbolism. Submissiveness is more important but since Scripture calls for both, we teach both. Symbolism definitely did not end with Jesus. Baptism and the Lord’s supper are two practices that hold symbolic meaning that were practiced after Christ ascended.

Paul wasn’t writing on his own authority but was inspired by God (2 Tim 3:16). Peter calls Paul’s writings Scripture (2 Peter 3:16). The conclusion that Paul was mistaken is one we cannot support.
