A Uniquely Christian Symbol: How Head Coverings Were Unfamiliar To Everyone

A Uniquely Christian Symbol: How Head Coverings Were Unfamiliar To Everyone

When we read 1 Corinthians 11, our minds usually wonder about the culture of Corinth and the general customs of that time. “Maybe this was peculiar to the situation in that city? Maybe women wearing head coverings were normative back then? Maybe a man with his head covered stood for something bad in that culture?” When these questions are raised, the interpreter often concludes that since in our time and culture coverings aren’t normative and men wearing hats are not frowned upon, that we are free to abandon or change the symbol to something more meaningful to us. Though there are exegetical reasons for not taking this route, there are also cultural reasons for why that simply doesn’t work. See, behind this assumption is a belief that what Paul laid out regarding head covering was culturally normative, familiar, and meaningful. That’s just simply not true. Read more

Covering Testimony: Hannah Falanga

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a homemaker. I feel the Lord has called me to be this, as an example of someone who can, Lord willing, live well in such a setting—not trapped, not unfulfilled, not even unsuccessful, but rather someone who is following the Lord’s extremely personal calling for her life. I am a young lady in search of the set-apart life, living in hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus, governed by my Lord Jesus, living my life for the Lord by being an artist, fiber artist (crocheting and knitting), cook and baker, writer and blogger.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

I go to church at my local Calvary Chapel. It is a Bible upholding, traditional marriage teaching, pro-life loving, God fearing church which I am blessed to be a part of. The teaching there is not only sound, but challenging and in-depth. I am currently the only lady (or nearly the only—the other woman may be in another service) to wear a headcovering. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, my name is Irina Glazkova and I’m a single, Christian woman who is originally from Russia. I’ve been in Canada since September 2007. Before that, I lived in the USA for 11 months as an exchange student. I accepted Lord Jesus as savior at the age of 12 after searching through many different philosophies. During my childhood and early teens I had been bullied a lot mostly because I was born with deformed limbs and I have had seven surgeries. When I was born, doctors tried to convince my mom to leave me at the hospital because I was very sick and had physical deformities. Sadly, this is a common practice in Russia and in most post-Soviet countries. My mom refused. She sacrificed so much for my well-being. My biggest dream is to see my family come to Salvation. Bullying led me to search for the truth. I just couldn’t come to terms that there was no justice. I used to go with my mom to a Russian Orthodox church. However, I was conflicted by praying to saints, kneeling in front of icons and many other things. While in the United States I lived in Baptist pastor’s family. This is where my faith began to grow. I was seventeen years old at this point. While living in the United States I considered studying in Canada. A lady from my current church (Faith Bible Chapel) came to the USA for her son’s graduation. In addition, Memorial University of Newfoundland gave me an entrance scholarship. The Lord lead me here to Newfoundland. I enjoy hikes, outdoors, crafts, reading, writing, singing and watching clouds. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am the wife of one wonderful man, mother to three gorgeous children. I did not grow up in the church, but approximately 7 months before I married, the Lord saved me! Fast forward to now– I’ve been married for 22 years, I have a BS in Nursing and a MS in Education, but walked away from the outside workforce to raise our children. I’m now a full-time home keeping/homeschool educating momma.

I lead two dance ministries at our church. This to me has the similar challenges as head coverings. In dance, you have to work hard to minister through movement of your body, without letting your body become the focus of what people see. With head covering, you do not want the focus to be on the covering- style/fashion.

I enjoy sewing, gardening and expanding my cooking skills. I am a reformed, big mouthed black female working hard to serve the Lord. 🙂 Read more

I absolutely love my head coverings and undeniably adore what they represent. I have several … ok, maybe I have more than several. I have lots of different styles and colors, different patterns and textures! But what does this mean? It means that I have head coverings all over my closet, laying here and laying there!

I just had to get some organization in my closet. I wanted to be able to find a certain color when I needed it and not have to dig around for half an hour just to settle for something similar. So I set out on a mission and this is what I came up with. Read more
