Pastoral Testimony (Patrick Smith)

Pastoral Testimonies

Patrick Smith

1) Please introduce yourself and the church you pastor.

My name is Patrick Smith and I’m one of the teaching elders (pastors) at Upper Room Community Church in Chula Vista, California. We’re a small Christian church that believes that the Bible is the word of God and that Jesus is our Living Head.

2) Tell us how you came to believe that head covering is a timeless symbol for today.

Like most Christians in North America I’d learned to dismiss 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 as “cultural”. But about three years ago through Gospel Fellowships I began to be exposed to brothers and sisters that believed head covering was for today. So when I studied 1 Corinthians 11 to teach our small house church I was a little more open. When I got to “because of the angels” (1 Cor 11:10) it stopped me in my tracks.  It was as if the Holy Spirit highlighted that verse as I realized for the first time that there is nothing cultural about the Angels. From there I saw that Paul made other timeless arguments from the creation order, the authority structure in Gods kingdom, and nature.

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a very happily married wife and a part time teacher. I accepted Christ as my Savior and Lord when I was 10 years old, when my brother led me to Christ. I am a young lady in search of the set-apart life, living in hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus, governed by my Lord Jesus, living my life for the Lord. I’m a teacher but actually dedicated to my home and my husband.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it. Do others practice headcovering there?

My husband and I have both been going to Brethren assemblies for years but since moving to this area we found it difficult to find a good church fit. So each Sunday we travel to a nearby town where there is a brethren church. It’s called Emmaus Bible Church. Yes, mostly all the ladies in our fellowship practice it.

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi! It’s Caro, the author of the modesty-French-blog “La femme modeste“. I usually describe myself as a “circus girl” as that’s what I’ve practiced since I was a little. I even used to work as a circus teacher which allowed me to travel a little bit. One highlight was teaching in Finland for a year. Today I am back “at home” where I am joyfully learning to serve my family and giving my free time for God’s things, such as promoting modesty and headcovering through my blog.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it. Do others practice headcovering there?

I go to a baptist church in my town which is very evangelism-oriented. A young women who practices headcovering recently arrived in my church, just when I started to deal with the issue. Her presence really encouraged me! So today there are two veiled girls in this church. There is also another woman who always wear a hat but I don’t know if she does it as a dressing habit or if she does it because of biblical belief. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a grammar school student from Northern Ireland. I grew up in a loving Christian home, but my conceptions of gender roles were skewed by the liberal church that we attended (ordained women, pro-choice etc). I never read the Bible but acted in a very self-righteous manner. God began to act in my life and I suddenly desired to read the scriptures for myself. That is when I was saved by the Lord Jesus Christ. Over time I realised that I could not stay in the church I grew up in because I did not feel that the Bible was given the correct authority. My parents gave me permission to leave when I turned 16 – they do not agree with me but they have been great in not letting it affect our relationship. These days my free time is mostly devoted to exam preparation, but in my free time I enjoy reading and writing Christian fiction. I also have an interest in the theology of Calvin and the other reformers and I hope to study theology when I leave school. My greatest desire is to become a wife and mother, but who knows what the Lord has in store! Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello! My name is Deborah, I am a stay at home wife and home-schooling mother of three (ages 11, 9, and 5), who resides in central Virginia. When school is done for the day, I sporadically work from home on graphic design and websites as co-owner of silvermaplemedia.com. I also enjoy digitally designing religiously-themed word art in my spare time. When I am not on the computer, I fancy playing the piano, which is a fulfillment of a life long dream. (I began learning at the same time my oldest child started lessons 6 years ago.) I occasionally have opportunity to sculpt with fondant for special occasion cakes as well, which is loads of fun!

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

I attend a Reformed Baptist Church in Central VA, which adheres to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of faith. We are a small rural church of only 30 members. As such, we are like one big family. Only one other wife practices head covering in our church and her family just moved here in 2014. The Lord used her as the catalyst to my conviction. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a homemaker. I feel the Lord has called me to be this, as an example of someone who can, Lord willing, live well in such a setting—not trapped, not unfulfilled, not even unsuccessful, but rather someone who is following the Lord’s extremely personal calling for her life. I am a young lady in search of the set-apart life, living in hope of eternal life in Christ Jesus, governed by my Lord Jesus, living my life for the Lord by being an artist, fiber artist (crocheting and knitting), cook and baker, writer and blogger.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

I go to church at my local Calvary Chapel. It is a Bible upholding, traditional marriage teaching, pro-life loving, God fearing church which I am blessed to be a part of. The teaching there is not only sound, but challenging and in-depth. I am currently the only lady (or nearly the only—the other woman may be in another service) to wear a headcovering. Read more

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Mindy Sue. I am a wife and a stay-at-home mom to two little boys (and another baby coming in March!). I love to sew and create many other crafts from recycled materials although most of my time these days is spent cooking, cleaning and teaching the ABC’s. I look forward to working in the vegetable garden when the weather’s nice and we hope to have livestock soon, too (fresh eggs, yum!). When I’m not pregnant [which isn’t very often:)] I like to help my husband with landscaping and home repairs and anything that will get my hands dirty and work up a good sweat.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

My family has recently started a local Church of Christ assembly. My husband and I both have been going to Baptist churches for years but since moving to this area and having difficulty finding a good fit in a Baptist Church we decided to try a Church of Christ. Although there are a few theological differences we appreciate their exegetical teaching and their commitment to adhere to God’s word. As far as I can tell, I am the only one who wears a head covering. Read more
