Head Coverings | History, Context, and Exegesis (Sermon)

Preacher: Dr. Carlton C. McLeod | Sermon Length: 1 hr 8 min | Year preached: May 2014

pastor

Dr. McLeod is a native of Columbia, SC and grew up in Upper Marlboro, MD. In 1987, he enlisted in the United States Navy and reached the rank of O-3 before the Lord called him into full-time ministry. In 1997, Dr. McLeod and his wife Donna established Calvary Revival Church Chesapeake. Dr. McLeod is relentless in his pursuit to compassionately teach with a biblical worldview. After spending his early years in ministry attempting to pull young people out of the kingdom of darkness with all the world’s methods, the Lord led Dr. McLeod back to the Bible to see the critical need for constant, fervent, and Spirit led biblical family discipleship. The D6 Reformation was created out of this desire. Dr. McLeod earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science from Hampton University; a Master of Theology and Doctor of Ministry from Andersonville Theological Seminary. He and his wife Donna have been married since 1992 and they have two beautiful daughters, Dori and Aryanna and a son, Jonathan.

Covering Testimony: April Cassidy

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello, my name is April Cassidy. I am a very happily married wife and mother of 2 children, a part time pharmacist, a blogger at www.peacefulwife.com and an aspiring author. I accepted Christ as my Savior and Lord when I was 5 years old, when my Daddy led me to Christ.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

We attend First Baptist Church of Columbia, SC. It is a LARGE church with an average attendance of over 2000 people. Our pastor seeks to teach from a very biblical perspective and uphold the Word of God. We have incredible diversity there. It is a downtown church, so we have people from all over the city and suburbs who worship with us. We also have a Burmese church, a Hispanic church, a special ed ministry, a deaf ministry, a ministry for the homeless, as well as strong ministries for every age group. We have been members there for 8 years now. Before that, we attended a Southern Baptist church in our town where my husband’s father was the pastor for 21 years. Read more

“My journey with head covering I guess began as a child……Click on the giveaway and enter for your chance to win a head covering from Garlands of Grace!!!!” (Giveaway ends tomorrow, May 1st)
  • The history of headcoverings in the Church (Examiner.com)
“While most Christian women today do not veil their heads, many are surprised to learn that wearing headcoverings was actually the rule throughout the history of the Church…Below is a list of quotations from historically important theologians that make it clear that wearing such coverings was the universal practice of the Christian Church.”
  • It’s never too late for Easter bonnets (With God’s Help)
“I read a number of sites that had been suggested to me in order to better understand the arguments against headcovering. In the end, the most compelling reason to me is simply that it is commanded in the same breath that other directions we have been given and maintain are.”
  • Head Coverings and a Consistent Biblical Hermeneutic (Reformed Christian Theology)
“Paul does not say “nor have the churches of God for now” or “in Greece” or any other qualifying phrase or context in which the commandment is given. If this is the case, how can we not interpret the command to be important and to be followed as a matter of obedience?”

Covering Testimony: Crystal Moyer

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, my name is Crystal Moyer! The Lord has been so gracious to me in my short 24 years, and I have seen Him work so intimately in my life that I cannot help but praise Him! I have grown up in the church, but not always a church that preaches from the Bible and so that has been frustrating and caused me to seek a church that firmly stands on the Word as  their source of Authority. I currently work as a social worker with adults who struggle with chronic mental illnesses. I am also engaged to a wonderful man of God, Christopher and we are in a long distance relationship until I will move to Texas in the fall of 2014. My heart and mind have been transformed through Christ and His work in my life both through Scripture and through Christopher and his leading of Bible studies. I enjoy theatre and have been heavily involved in both high school and college in performances and wish to get involved some time in the future. I also enjoy singing and lifting praises to our God both in public worship and private prayer times. Christopher and I are a mixed couple (he is black and I am white) and we have gotten some strong resistance from family members about this. However, through the Lord working in their hearts, things have become much more civil. I am amazed at the man God has given me to marry and I look forward to the day we will be married! The Gospel is at the core of our relationship and we seek to literally live out the picture of Christ and His Church through our marriage. We have learned a lot and have much more to learn about what that truly means. Read more
