Covering Testimony: Crystal Moyer

1) Introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, my name is Crystal Moyer! The Lord has been so gracious to me in my short 24 years, and I have seen Him work so intimately in my life that I cannot help but praise Him! I have grown up in the church, but not always a church that preaches from the Bible and so that has been frustrating and caused me to seek a church that firmly stands on the Word as  their source of Authority. I currently work as a social worker with adults who struggle with chronic mental illnesses. I am also engaged to a wonderful man of God, Christopher and we are in a long distance relationship until I will move to Texas in the fall of 2014. My heart and mind have been transformed through Christ and His work in my life both through Scripture and through Christopher and his leading of Bible studies. I enjoy theatre and have been heavily involved in both high school and college in performances and wish to get involved some time in the future. I also enjoy singing and lifting praises to our God both in public worship and private prayer times. Christopher and I are a mixed couple (he is black and I am white) and we have gotten some strong resistance from family members about this. However, through the Lord working in their hearts, things have become much more civil. I am amazed at the man God has given me to marry and I look forward to the day we will be married! The Gospel is at the core of our relationship and we seek to literally live out the picture of Christ and His Church through our marriage. We have learned a lot and have much more to learn about what that truly means.

2) Where do you attend church? Tell us a little bit about it.

I just recently started attending Hilltown Baptist (in the last 2 months) after trying to find a church and attending with my parents for a while where they go. The church is over 200 years old and is very Biblically based. The pastor there has been very key in the reconciliation of family members regarding the skin color issue. No one else in my church wears a head covering, and my pastor still holds that it is a cultural thing, but they are affirming that the Lord has convicted me to do such.

3) What led you to start covering?

I grew up in a Mennonite church, where mostly elderly women would wear coverings. Having Anabaptist ancestry, I was always intrigued by the notion of covering my head. Whenever I asked questions, pastors or leaders in the church would respond that the head covering was a cultural thing of the time and does not apply to today. It wasn’t until I began dating my now fiance, Chris when I looked deeper into the text. Chris is someone who does not worry about culture or tradition, but is always focused on what the Word of God says, commands and teaches. Chris asked me what I thought about the verse in 1 Corinthians 11 about a woman covering her head and I completely disregarded it. He asked me to look again and do some in-depth study and I agreed. Upon my own research in the Bible and books I had found, I felt convicted that I needed to be covering my head. At first, Chris and I decided when we are married is when I will cover my head, but then I did some more study and realized the command is not because of the husband, it is because of the Lord. Another thing I found was the word for woman and wife in Greek is used interchangeably and so I decided to start covering my head in January, 2014.

4)  Tell us a bit more about your study. What kind of resources did you use to study?

Other than the Bible, I read the book “Glories Seen and Unseen” by Warren A. Henderson as well as listened to a teaching by R.C. Sproul on the subject. R.C. Sproul as well as Henderson talk about the head covering being commanded based off of the original order of creation. If the order of creation is mentioned as the basis for doing it, then we know that what Paul is talking about is timeless rather than a cultural phenomenon. Another indicator that this passage is not addressed to a specific culture or time period, is because Paul states we need to do this “because of the angels.” Angels are also timeless and not bound by culture or tradition.

5) What was that first Sunday like when you showed up in a covering?

I had talked about it with a few friends before starting to wear it, so some friends at church came up to me that first Sunday and said “oh you are wearing a head covering now?” and I explained why and they thought it was neat and good that I was doing what the Lord showed me I needed to do.

6) What kind of covering(s) do you use? Where did you get them?

I use a few different sites, but one I really like is Etsy.com. The one I have on now is actually called a Tichel and is from India and covers the whole head except some hair showing in the front. I also have one covering that is used for chemo patients. One site I also used was Headcoverings by Devorah.

I am looking to buy more since I only have 4 so if anyone knows other good places to get them let me know!
